Healthy Mind, Healthy Body

I’ve been teaching yoga for almost 10 years now and one of the reasons I love it is it keeps my mind healthy.  I do not practice yoga as a religion, rather as a great form of exercise.  It keeps my body strong and flexible and it helps me be mindful of all I do, in class and in life.   The principles I teach in yoga transfer to life very well.   In class, we look at how our bodies are responding to different postures.  Instead of just jumping on a treadmill or bike and letting your mind wander, in yoga we are constantly looking to our bodies for feedback.    When you are intentional about what you are doing and thinking your stress levels will lower.    How many of us go through the day accomplishing tasks only to collapse at the end of the day with little thought of what we really did?  Practicing yoga can help you reflect not only on what your physical body is doing but where your emotions and thoughts are taking you.  Do you think of the glass as half empty or half full?  If you find yourself thinking more negatively, your actions and words will reflect that.  It will also cause more stress.  We all know the impact stress has on the physical body so it is important to look at where you are at on that spectrum.

There are good things that can come from most situations.   Most of us have family, friends, a place to sleep and food to eat.   Take time each day to reflect on the blessings in your life.   Journaling is a healthy habit and can be a place to list all you are thankful for.
